About the Koeiman family
This family name, with this typical spelling, appears to be originaly from Curacao, Netherland Antilles. Several spellings of it existed in the past: Coijmans, Coymans,Coeymans,Koeymans,Koeijmans,Koeimans, Koeijman, Koeyman ... and finaly KOEIMAN. The name's origin goes back to the family "Coymans" alias "Coijmans" from Antwerp who got pretty involved in the Dutch West Indisch Company.
Some of them are to be found in the former dutch colony of Nieuw Amsterdam which later became New York. Some appeared on the Ghanean coast in Africa, on Cape of good hope...Some other established in former dutch colony of Curacao and gave "manumitie" to some of their slaves in the 18th century.Balthasar Coeymans had at least 3 daughters with a free black lady,Catharina Bentura. Those daughters have been recognised by their father and are at the origin of the "coloured" Koeimans on Curacao.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the past, the spelling was not fixed and a same person had his name written on different ways. In order to make it easier for the readers, I did chose the following spellings which originaly appear the most:
* COYMANS = White people in Europe
* COEYMANS = White people in America (North or South) * KOEIMAN = Coloured people in or from Curacao
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This family tree is mostly going about persons who lived on the present territory of Curacao but some branches emigrated to the USA, Venezuela, Cuba, Holland, Belgium...
